One of the clubs more consistent runners, Ben Goode has taken first place honours in this Sundays Bendigo Athletic Club 5km race conducted through the hills of Mandurang.
On the tough hilly course, commencing at the Mandurang Cricket Ground Goode showed his class by running his quickest km rate of the season while most others ran slower on the challenging course.
Goode defeated a field of 30 runners in a time of 18.38 to win the Vin Drechsler Memorial 5000 Metres Handicap sponsored event. With a previous win and a second place to his name over the last couple of years on this course, it’s safe to say Goode likes venue.
Having started off on a handicap of 11.10, Goode set off with co-marker & recent race winner, Brett Gilligan to chase down the 24 runners ahead of him.
Having pulled away from Gilligan, Goode was making swift progress in picking off his fellow club mates in front of him. Although fellow backmarkers Dan Ryan & Josh Sait were putting in terrific runs Goode always looked to be in control. Out in front Kane Ellis & Ingrid Douglass started to make their moves at the back end of the race, however Goode held strong and finished the race off to win quite convincingly by a margin of 13 seconds.
Ellis proceeded to come 2nd whilst Douglass just held on to finish in 3rd position.
With Jacob Nolan away after having some minor medical treatment this week’s fastest time went to former club champion Josh Sait in 17.50 with Ingrid Douglass running fastest time for the women in 21.58.
Next Sunday’s race on the 22nd of July, will be a 3km out at No. 7 Reservoir commencing at 10:30am. After the race there will also be a social lunch at The Old Boundary Hotel who are the sponsor of the day’s event.
