The Club Mourns the Passing of Marty Hogan

BAC members are mourning the loss of Marty Hogan, one of the early pillars of the BAC.

As well as having a long and successful career as a competitor himself in both the track and cross-country spheres, Marty was also a coach and mentor of many runners, several of whom are still competing with the Club today.

Marty also enlivened many BAC occasions whether by telling some of his apparently endless supply of humorous stories relating to running or by deciding that all present should participate in a good old-fashioned sing-along.  Few knew how to enjoy themselves as thoroughly as he did.

Marty was instrumental in the founding of the BAC and because of the respect he was held in was asked to become its first President.  As a result of his long period of service to the Club he was awarded Life-Membership in 1985.

While age (he passed away this week at the age of 92) and deteriorating health had limited Marty’s involvement with the Club in recent years he is still fondly remembered by many and will be a legend for as long as the BAC exists.
