Last year’s Girl’s Champion Emma Gilligan reminded her competitors why she won that title with a commanding win in the Junior 1km event at No. 7 Res on Sunday. Emma passed Baxter Parker in the last 100 metres of the event and pulled away to win by four seconds.
Baxter narrowly claimed second place, holding off a fast-finishing Ava Stewart by two seconds. Ava and Baxter are expected to again fight out the finish at their next meeting.
Emma’s 3:47 for the distance, an excellent time on a slow course, was fastest time for the event, 11 seconds quicker than second-fastest Jazlin Fear. Racing next week moves to Notley’s Picnic Area in the Whipstick Forest, and with a downhill finish this course should make for fast and furious racing.
